On the 15th of October 2008, Cameroon will be launching second-level domains such as .co.cm, .com.cm and .net.cm.
Anyone wanting to apply must have a registered trademark using the exact name that they want to register. The application must also be supplemented by providing a trademark certificate in English.
The trademark certificate should contain the following information:
• Trademark registration number
• Date of application
• Date of registration
• Trademark name
• Country/organisation where the trademark is registered
When registering a trademark you should bear in mind that figure and service marks can only be used if they have a clear and dominant section containing words. The trademark can be licensed to another applicant but the owner of the trademark must then consent to the domain name registration in writing. International Domain Names and special characters such as those outside a–z and 0–9, as well as question and exclamation marks, can be replaced with a hyphen, or alternatively can be left out completely.
Sunrise period for .cm domain names:
The sunrise period will last up to and including October 31st 2008, and will be followed by a Sunrise trial period between November 1st and November 14th 2008.
The domain names will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so make sure you register your .cm domain today!
Registration of top-level .cm domains has previously been open, but is now closed as the registry will be focusing on the registration of second-level domains. The opportunity to register a name directly under .cm will be launched in the future, but a schedule does not exist for this as of yet. When there is one, priority will be given to customers who have already registered domain names as second-level domains, in what is known as a grandfather sunrise.
Registering without the need for a trademark, i.e. open registration for everyone, will be possible from the 15th of November 2008.
