Other trademarks

If you want to have a trademark outside Sweden and the EU you can apply either to each country’s authority or through WIPO.

An application through WIPO is based on a registration or application regarding a previous trademark. If the previous application does not lead to registration of the trademark within five years, then registration will also fail in the countries for which the international application is being made.

Anyone applying for protection for a trademark must state in which countries the protection is to apply, and it will be up to the country in question to decide whether the protection will apply in that country. The protection applies for ten years, and can be extended by a further ten years upon expiry of the previous period.
