What is the difference between a gTLD and a ccTLD?

A gTLD (Generic Top Level Domain) is a top-level domain not linked to any specific country, but which is aimed at a group with a common affiliation or purpose. gTLDs usually comprise three or more characters. Examples of gTLDs are .com, .net, .mobi, .aero, .asia and .travel.

A ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain) is a country-linked domain with two characters. There are currently around 250 ccTLDs. Each country domain has its own regulations and its own pricing. With a few exceptions, ccTLDs are delegated in accordance with ISO 3166 1 alpha-2. Examples of ccTLDs are .se for Sweden, .no for Norway, .de for Germany and .cn for China.

Can we use å, ä and ö for all our domains?

Previously, it was only possible to use the Latin characters a–z, the figures 0–9 and the hyphen (ASCII characters) in domain names. However, it has been possible to use other letters in domain names since 2003. Such names are known as IDN (Internationalised Domain Names). This applies to .se addresses that use å, ä, ö, é and ü, for example, and to .net, .nu, .info and .com addresses that use a number of other characters (â, à, æ, ë, ê, ç, õ, ø etc.) − not least for the major Asian languages.

How can we see who owns a domain name?

Contact us and we will help you compile whois information.

How many top-level domains are there?

There are over 250 country domains or ccTLDs, and 21 generic domains or gTLDs.

We have changed organisation registration number/company name. How will this affect our domains?

It is important to keep all the contact details for your domains up to date. A transfer from the old company to the new one is normally carried out in order to retain control and confirm ownership. We can help you carry out ownership changes and make sure you have the correct information for your domain names.

What new gTLDs are on their way?

Applications for new top-level domains are lodged with ICANN. It is a big step from this to releasing them on the market. Contact us for the latest news.

Can we move our domains to you?

If your portfolio is currently spread out with a number of different providers worldwide, we can help you gather all your domains under one and the same account. Gathering your domains with us will give you secure and efficient management of your portfolio.

How do we register a domain name?

We will help you register your desired domain names. Contact your Client Manager or call us on +46 31 720 2030 and we will help you.

Which domains are used the most?

Registered domain names are currently total around 187 million. Most of them are still generic domains such as .com and .net, but more and more people are now choosing to register country domains such as .de for Germany, .co.uk for the UK and .cn for China. We can offer registration of any top-level domain.

Dipcon offers local contacts in over 30 countries. This means that you can register domains in many of the countries that require a local presence, even if you do not have one there yourself. Local presence could mean a company in the country in question, a local connection or a registered trademark. Thanks to our well developed network, we can help you protect your trademark and market yourself locally in places where it would not otherwise have been possible to register your domain. We are constantly working to expand and simplify the opportunities for you to have a presence worldwide. Contact us if you have any questions about domain names and local presence.

How can we update the details for our domains?

Tell us which contact details you want for your domain names, and we will then carry out an update in line with your requirements.

Why are there so many contact details for a domain name?

A domain name has four contact areas − Owner, Administrative, Billing and Technical Contact − with different rights and authorisations. As one of Dipcon’s DMS customers, we update all your contact areas, apart from ownership details, so that we are the named contact. The ownership details remain with you. Naturally, if you have other requirements, we will comply with these.

Why are there such price differences between one domain and another?

Each top-level domain is run by an individual registry that sets its own requirements, rules and prices. We aim to get the best price for each domain without compromising quality and security.

Which domains should we register?

A domain portfolio should go hand in hand with the trademark strategy, and may thus differ greatly from one company to another. The strategy should be designed to suit the trademarks, products, markets and competitors in question. Dipcon has great experience in the field of domain strategies, and will be happy to help design a complete domain portfolio in line with your requirements. Contact us to start or continue your work.

What is a delegation?

Delegation involves changing name servers for your domain. This can be done by changing your hosting provider (e.g. your e-mail and website provider).

What is an auth code/auth-info code/EPP code?

An AUTH-INFO code is a 6- to 16-character code that is allocated when the domain name is registered. The code is chiefly a password for the domain name and is used, for example, in the event of a registrar transfer in order to identify the domain name owner.

How do we renew our domains?

As you are one of Dipcon’s DMS customers, we always renew your domain names and services, unless you have cancelled them.

Which domains/addresses are available?

To see which domains are available for registration you should enter the desired wording (without www) in the Search For/Register Domains field on our website, and in the next field you should select the geographical region you are interested in. You can also contact us, and we will help you find the information.

How do we cancel our domains?

Notify your Client Manager or send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We always request written cancellations, either by e-mail or by post.

How do we cancel our domains?

We usually recommend that our customers centralise their domain holdings as far as possible, but this is obviously dependent on the nature of your company and your strategy. Contact us and we will advise you in line with your circumstances.

Our domain is not available. What do we do?

The method for taking over an already registered domain name varies depending on the circumstances. If you can prove trademark infringement the domain name can be adopted by legal means. In other instances the only option may be to acquire the domain from the current owner. We collect background information and then recommend the best approach to gaining control of the domain name in question.

How can we have an overview of our domain names?

You can see an overview of your domain names by logging in to your DMS account, or contact us and we will produce it for you.

Can you help us with a domain name strategy?

Yes, we will help with solutions for choosing and devising domain name strategies and trademark strategies. We recommend that all companies have a domain name strategy. The domain name strategy should form the basis for all a company’s choices and actions in conjunction with the registration of domain names and hosting services. The strategy should be in writing, and communicated to all parts of the organisation in order to be maintained correctly and for as long as possible. A domain name strategy often goes hand in hand with a company’s trademark strategy or is a part of it. It is thus important to register domain names for the trademarks you have registered and in the countries where the trademarks are valid. As trademark registration takes longer than domain name registration, the domain name should be registered first, in order to ensure protection in the countries in which the trademark is to be registered.

How can we get back a domain we have lost?

If the domain is available you just have to re register it. If the domain has been registered by someone else, we will either help you buy back the name or we will try and get the name back by legal means. Contact us and we will carry out an assessment and recommend the best approach.
